A Guide to the Writings of Cornelius Van Til
by Eric Bristley

Introduction
This bibliographic guide has been used in the development of the CD-ROM of the writings of Van Til. Beginning in the 1920s until his death in 1987, Dr. Cornelius Van Til wrote over five hundred books, syllabi, articles, editorials, book reviews, pamphlets, and manuscripts. Those who seek to explore the Van Til CD-ROM are here provided with a complete guide to virtually everything Van Til has written. Although not every document listed here has been included on the CD-ROM, selected quotations provide a taste of their content and present the main themes of Van Til?s thought.
It is intended not merely as a tribute to the ?prince of Christian apologetes? in the twentieth century, but as a record of the unparalleled contribution of a man gifted by God to ?earnestly contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.? We believe that an ignorance of the wisdom and warnings that God has given to the Church through the writings of Dr. Van Til has opened, and will open, the door for new compromises on the part of Christians with the apostate thought of the natural man.
The Church today needs men and women who will not abandon the historical confession of the true Church, but will, as Van Til did, build upon the gold, silver, and precious stones given by Christ to his bride throughout the centuries. Van Til aimed throughout his life and work to be faithful and consistent in taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. He neither rejected the past nor lived in it, but sought to build on the work of John Calvin, Charles Hodge, Abraham Kuyper, Herman Bavinck, B. B. Warfield, Geerhardus Vos, C. W. Hodge, Jr., Klaas Schilder, and others, by developing what is most consistent with Scripture in their basic position. He said, ?We may, because of their work, go forward further still? (Jerusalem and Athens, p. 243). It is our task to go yet further, standing upon his shoulders and those of the faithful men he built upon.
The purpose of this guide is not only to provide a tool for research but to stimulate further application and development of Van Til?s thought. We desire that it might demonstrate the wealth of his permanent contribution to Christian thought in general, and Reformed thought and apologetics in particular. May this guide assist readers to more clearly understand Van Til?s ?total picture.‘

Development
The bibliography was developed in conjunction with the work of collecting Van Til?s writings in the archives of Westminster Theological Seminary?s Montgomery Library. This work took place over a period of about four years beginning in 1979 while the author was a student at the seminary. In the process of organizing the Van Til Papers, the Jerusalem and Athens bibliography (compiled by Arthur Kuschke and the library staff) was expanded to accommodate all that was being collected. References to periodical articles were checked and additional items were found in various journals.
The ultimate goal was to publish a collected writings of Van Til, but this was not feasible at the time. Rev. Lewis Grotenhuis suggested, however, that a complete bibliography should be published. Consequently a computer database was developed to assist in the cataloging and indexing of documents. The author sought to expand the usefulness of the original listing by furnishing annotations, excerpts, cross-references, and including a number of Van Til?s unpublished manuscripts. A list of audio recordings was also added. The preliminary work was submitted to an advisory committee in 1986, but was never published. In 1994 a complete revision was begun for use on the Van Til CD-ROM and completed in 1995 for the commemoration of the centenary of Van Til?s birth.

Acknowledgments
I would like to thank a number of people for their help and counsel in the production of this guide. Primary acknowledgment goes foremost to Rev. Lewis J. Grotenhuis, whose support and encouragement made this work initially possible. We dedicate this work to him, who has now entered into the joy of the Lord. I wish to thank Bret Davis, a fellow collaborator in the beginning stages, Grace Mullen, archivist at Westminster Theological Seminary, and Robert J. Kepple, librarian at the time. Personally, I would like to thank Robert K. Wright who first taught me Van Til. I am grateful to my wife, Kathleen, who helped enter and edit the text. Above all, I give thanks to the triune God for the opportunity to complete this work.

Bibliographic Style
Identification codes
The bibliographic style in this work was originally influenced by Robert Kepple?s book, Reference Works for Theological Research and John E. Meeter and Roger Nicole?s Bibliography of Benjamin Breckinridge Warfield (Presbyterian and Reformed, 1974). The bibliography is organized in chronological order beginning with 1920. Every article, review, book, etc. that could be found has been identified using a code which consists of the year in which it was published followed by a decimal point and a letter of the alphabet for each item within that year (e.g. 1954.A, 1954.B, 1954.C). Not every item could be absolutely verified as to the year of its publication, therefore some are approximations. Where no date could be determined, the item has been listed after the main bibliography in a section entitled ?undated manuscripts.?
The code should be read as follows:
1954.B The whole item listed under that code
1954.B1 The first chapter or section listed under that code
1954.Ba1 The first appendix of the item listed under that code
[cf. 1954.B] Compare with the item listed under this code

Cross-references
The coding system also provides a convenient means for cross referencing, enabling the reader to trace Van Til?s use of a certain section or chapter in a later work, or to see how separate articles were later gathered into a published collection. They also enable the reader to trace various similar writings or later/earlier editions of the item. In the case of books the cross-reference code specifies chapters by a number following the letter [1963.B1, 1963.B2, 1963.B3], or by a lower case ?a? followed by a number to indicate which appendix is referenced [1971.Ea1]. In the case of syllabi the cross reference following the symbol (=>) indicates the code for the next edition of that syllabus.

Types of Documents Listed
Books, syllabi, articles, addresses, sermons and book reviews are identified by a different typestyle. Various editions, revisions, and reprints of books are noted. All the standard publishing data is given with each item and any other relevant information. Syllabi are treated in a similar format as the books, though some documents which Van Til called syllabi are really mimeographed papers that were distributed to students. For both books and syllabi, the chapter titles have been listed to give the reader a fuller idea of the contents, and enable cross-referencing of specific chapters, since a number of them were originally distinct addresses, articles, or chapters in syllabi.

Annotations and Quotations
Sometimes a brief one-line description of an item?s contents or a background note to clarify its context is given, and in other instances a more extensive note has been provided. Excerpts have been selected from many of the writings to give a brief introduction to central points in Van Til?s thought. What was intended in these cases was to let Dr. Van Til speak for himself in introducing the reader to his writings, and to stimulate further reading.
Unpublished Writings, Translations, and Audio Tapes
Following the main bibliography are a number of lists of manuscripts that could not be assigned a date, but are publishable material. No attempt has been made to list all possible manuscripts in the Van Til Papers. Next is a list of translations of certain of Van Til?s writings. A list of audio recordings of various lectures and sermons is also given.

Lists and Index
In addition to the chronological bibliography, all the titles are listed separately according to type of document (e.g. book, syllabus, pamphlet, article, review, etc). A short title list of all entries by date is provided at the beginning of the book, and serves as a table of contents to the bibliography.
