Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations

The quest for Christian unity in the world, "That they may all be one" (John 17:21), inspires the faith and shapes the life of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations has the task of assisting this church in that quest.

( 세계의 일치라는 기독교인의 염원, " 너희는 하나가 될찌니라 " ( 요 17 : 21 )라는 말씀은 미국 복음주의 루터교의 생명을 형성하고 믿음을 불어넣는다. 루터교단의 에큐메니칼 운동과 타종교 관계 화합 운동 조직은 그러한 염원 속에서 있는 이 교회를 지원하는 일을 한다. )

Who We Are - What We Do
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is committed to fostering unity between the children of God for the sake of the world. The ELCA Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Relations is responsible for encouraging the activity of ecumenical life in the ELCA, and for enhancing the public commitments of this church in Lutheran, ecumenical, and interfaith discussions.

LCMS leaders attend ecumenical meeting with pope

"Christ, Our Hope for Unity" was the theme for an April 18 prayer service led by Pope Benedict XVI at St. Joseph Parish, a German Roman Catholic congregation in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, N.Y., with some 350 ecumenical guests in attendance.

Among the 30 Lutherans invited to attend this "ecumenical meeting" with the pope, as it was referred to in the invitation, were Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod President Gerald B. Kieschnick and Dr. Samuel H. Nafzger, one of the LCMS participants in the U.S. Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue and executive director of the Synod's Commission on Theology and Church Relations. Also attending were local LCMS pastors and officials in New York City.

Representatives from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) included Dr. Lowell G. Almen, Lutheran co-chair of the U.S. Lutheran뻉oman Catholic Dialogue, and Dr. Donald McCoid, director of the church body's Ecumenical Office.
The service was led liturgically by Benedict XVI, who delivered the "Address." All worship assignments were carried out exclusively by Roman Catholics. After the benediction, greetings were exchanged with the pope by 15 of the ecumenical guests -- 11 were chosen from among national leadership participants, and four were from New York, including Dr. David Benke, president of the LCMS Atlantic District. In his response to Benke's greeting, the pope specifically requested, "Please greet all in The Lutheran Church뾏issouri Synod for me."

Nafzger said the Synod's local and national leaders appreciated being invited to the ecumenical event.

"Especially meaningful," he added, "was the inclusion in the worship program of the following quotation from the pope's 2005 address at the World Youth Day: 'Among Christians, fraternity is not just a vague sentiment ... it is grounded in the supernatural reality of the one Baptism which makes us all members of the one Body of Christ.'"

로마 카톨릭과 같이 종교 다원주의를 표명하며 종교 연합적 에큐메니즘을 적극적으로 실천하는 교파들 중에 루터교와 성공회가 있습니다. 이들은 복음주의 진영에서는 WCC와 함께 로마 카톨릭을 비롯한 모든 기독교파들의 일치 운동을 강력하게 실천하고 있으며, 다른 한편에서는 로마 카톨릭과 WCC와 더불어 타종교와의 화합 운동을 적극적으로 벌이고 있습니다.

마틴 루터는 로마 카톨릭의 반교리적 행태와 부패에 대하여 반기를 들고 종교 개혁을 주도한 인물로서 평가되고 있었습니다. 그런데 현재 세계 루터교 연맹( LWF )과 루터교의 주요 교단인 미국 복음주의 루터교단 ( ELCA )이 종교 연합적 에큐메니즘에 적극적이며, 다른 주요 교단의 하나인 LCMS도 로마 카톨릭에 화합적인 자세를 보이고 있습니다. 마틴 루터를 큰 지도자로 삼고 일어난 역사적 배경을 갖고 있는 루터교의 아이러니이며 혁명이라 하지 않을 수 없습니다.

위 루터교단에서 제작한 동영상을 보시면, 이슬람과 기독교의 신은 같다라는 것을 중심테마로 잡고 교리적 접근을 꾀하고 있습니다. 지금 로마 카톨릭이 이슬람에 대하여 취하는 것과 똑같은 자세를 갖고 똑같은 행보를 하고 있습니다. 기독교 내의 일치이든 타종교와의 화합에 관하여든 이 두 종파, 즉 루터교와 성공회가 매우 적극적인 것은 그 이유와 역사적 배경이 분명히 있다고 생각되며 이에 대하여 연구할 필요가 있다고 봅니다.
